2011 Flathead Classic Wrap-up

What a bumper year for the Classic!

The 18th Flathead Classic was another fantastic event breaking a number of records, the biggest field ever, with the most Juniors and most female anglers competing! We welcomed many new sponsors this year welcomed back some great sponsors who have stood b y this tournament year in year out. There is something about this iconic event that brings anglers back year after year and warrants such comments as:

Just a quick e-mail to say a big thank you personally and your Committee for what for me was one of the most friendly and well run fishing competitions I have ever attended.

The planning ‘appeared’ flawless, the organisation smooth and the food was really exceptional, just what you needed after a full day on the water…especially Thursday evening!!

It was my first classic and I’ll be back next year all going to plan.

It is this appreciation and a passion for this tournament that also drives our committee to put in the hard yards throughout the year. As President I would like to acknowledge all the efforts of our committee, their families and the members that rolled up their sleeves in 2011 without you this event just would not happen.  This Years Champion Team pictured above Dead Fishy marginally beat out Team Sands in the end there was 1 fish in it! You can check out the full results in the Gold Coast Flathead Classic TAB above 2011 Results.Dead Fishy had a 10 point plan for this years Classic and Team Captain and popular Fishing Journalist David Green tells me all 10 points got put into play. The bite certainly was more timid and the fish still quite spread out and Dead Fishy report fishing territory that they had not fished for years. Spending quite a bit of time trolling the team managed to keep the numbers ticking over when some of us were scratching our heads! There is no doubt that if you put 186 teams on a waterway it is going to make the fishing tough, however the fish were there if you were preapred to be flexible in your approach and Dead Fishy and Team Sands  certainly stood above the field in 2011.

2011 saw us offer an excellent Boat, Motor and Trailer package in our Random Draw and from what I am told the best we have had on offer. The great thing about our random prize draw is you don’t have to catch fish to win great prizes. Whilst our category winners take home the trophies it is the whole field who have the chance to take home a swag of excellent prizes. A big thanks to Blue Fin Boats who manufacture a high quality product right here on the Gold Coast the Sportfishing Club is proud to have such a great homegrown company as a partner. The package included a fabulous 60HP Suzuki 4 stroke and for that we thank the team at White Water Marine and Suzuki Marine, this was teamed up with an excellent trailer by another great local product Oceanic Trailers. I encourage all of you to get behind these excellent local businesses that get behind our tournament. I certainly have noticed more and more Blue Fin boats in our field over the years which is fantastic to see. A thanks also to all our Sponsors who donated products and services not only for our major draw but also our Tournament bag.

Speaking of the tournament bag I am happy to report the biggest fish caught  in the tournament and on a soft plastic was caught on a ZMan product provided in the tournament bag Kurt Buhner caught a 91cm cracker on the ZMan ! Well done Kurt. The biggest fish caught on a hard body was also using one of our sponsors product a Lively Lures Micro Mullet! Lively Lures provided all our Juniors with lures this year and it is great to hear our anglers using our sponsor products.
