    hello,

A while back I was given an old catalogue from a fishing tackle company called Foster Bros (Ashbourne). I reckon it dates from about 1964. I was intrigued by the prices and have tried to ‘translate’ them into today’s money, simply based on average weekly earnings then vs now. Most of the rods are cane and come in at an equivalent of several hundred quid – similar to hand built cane rods these days – but there are no really cheap rods, unlike today. Cheapest fly reel was about £65 in today’s money (by my crude calculation); silk line about £100 odd. Flies came in at just under £2 each! It’s no doubt too simplistic, but it was an interesting exercise. I’ve written a bit about it on my blog, with some examples, if anyone is interested in this sort of thing.

    Thanks!
