Friday Comes Good for the Austackle Easter Bream Classic
From all reports prefishing had been very tough the week leading into the comp but anglers were hoping to find the going somewhat easier come comp time. Unfortunately that wasnt to be the case with many teams reporting a tough bite and one team catching all but one of their 5 in the last 15 minutes. A high tide early morn and a big swell saw some teams head straight for the mouth and fish the seaway walls while others took their chance fishing the structure of pontoons , rock walls bridge pylons in the rivers.AS the tide dropped the fishing seemed to improve with teams getting better catches as the day went on.
That was how the day unfolded for our winning team ‘One More Cast’ the brothers Shane and Nathan Wolhunter fished the Nerang River working structure and
using the chubby deep cranks and the Jellyprawn soft lures, the pairing scored the big bream for the day weighing in at .87 scoring a bonus $100 Gold Coast Fishing Tackle voucher for Big Bream. In second place ‘I’m on’ Toby Back and Lois Taylor fished a similar strategy spot hoping to get their five fish. In 3rd was Team Bush N Beach/Berkley our highest place team fishing with a junior, young James Britton was happy at the bump tubs to be weighing in a bag of five fish. A real feature of this comp is many of the tournament regulars take the opportunity to fish with their kids or partners this year seeing us break our record for female anglers in the field with 5 females in the field, 2 of them keen junior anglers. It was great to see so many teams out enjoying a days Bream fishing on the Gold Coast. Many taking the opportunity to compete for Classic
Grand Final places, with the top 10% of the field securing a place at the Gold Coast event later in the year. The Gold Coast Sportfishing Club would like to thank our naming rights sponsor Austackle who set each team in the field on their way with a $90 team bag. Anglers had the opportunity to fish the new range of lures from Austackle which had landed just 2 days before. We would also like to thank Lowrance who provided a HDS Gen 2 and an Elite 5 with DSI along with a bunch of merchandise. If you are keen to earn more about the GEN 2 range be sure to get along to our next club night on Thursday 12 th from 6.30 pm at our clubhouse to hear Navico rep Ken Thompson share all the latest news and tips on Gen 2. We would also like to thank our other sponsors, Battery Traders, Pure Fishing, Engel, Gold Coast Fishing Tackle, Evolution Jigheads and Oxenford Bait & Tackle. V]The Southport Volunteer Marine Rescue was the base for the event and we happily made a donation on behalf of all competitors, this volunteer organization does a great job and if you are not a member be sure to support them.
A sporting association such as the GCSFC does not survive without an active membership and as Tournament Director and Club President I offer a big thanks to those members who supported or volunteered at this event. From chasing sponsors, cooking sausages and weighing fish our members I know you do this for the betterment of our club. A special mention to Vice President Bruce Anderson and clubman Stephen Wilson who both did work behind the scene to make the comp possible. Last of all thanks to all the anglers who got out to support this years tournament we look forward to seeing you at the Dash for Cash.
